Seek First

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall
be added unto you.

Too many other things are getting in the way of the gospel!

We spend too much time trying to make a living and too little time seeking God.
Usually, God gets the limited amount of time we a lot to him and it is not enough time to really get to
know God.  There is not enough time devoted to Him and His priorities.

We spend too much time ‘chasing after life’.  We want to ‘live’ – which is just another way of saying
that we seek pleasure.  Jesus made an interesting statement.  He said the way to find life is to lose it.
Mr 8:35  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the
gospel will save it. (NIV)

What he was saying is this – sometimes the harder you try to catch something the more it seems to
get away from you, because you go about trying to get it the wrong way.

We look at happiness it is something we can hunt down and cap-ture.  But everything we do to
achieve it leaves us unsatisfied in the end.  That’s because happiness is not an end in itself.  Happi-
ness is a by-product of doing what God created you to do.

It’s like looking for something in the wrong place.  God has con-nected life with himself so much that
you can never find true life anywhere else but in Him.  Our tendency is to try to create our own life,
when what we need to do is pour ourselves wholeheartedly into God.  Then we find that all that we
wanted is right there in Him.

Notice the other comments in our passage:
Mt 6:21  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Whatever you value will control your life.  Where are you placing the most emphasis in your life?  That
will be what your life will be about.

Your treasure is that which you value.  Whatever you value will guide, and consume, your life.  Your
heart will always be in what you value the most.  Your life will be about whatever you treasure.

I ask you, where is your treasure?  Where is your heart?  Where do you place the greatest emphasis
in your life?  What are your priori-ties?

Listen to this:
Mt 6:24  "No-one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be
devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. (NIV)

You will either live for God or for the world.  You cannot live for both.  You may think you can.  You
may think you can divide up your time equally between God and other things, but it doesn’t work that
way.  One will always win out over the other.

Jos 24:15 … choose you this day whom ye will serve…

That choice happens one decision at a time.  Each moment you choose whom you will serve.

Again, Jesus speaks:
Mt 6:25  "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your
body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than
clothes? (NIV)

Mt 6:27  Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Jesus told us that the ‘cares of this world’ would pull us away from God – choke out the seed of the
gospel – and will ultimately de-stroy us.  But do we really believe that?  Do we really listen to that
warning?  Or do we just go on our way and get pulled into the trap without even noticing?

Be careful!  Satan is lurking out there ‘seeking whom he may de-vour”.

What are you looking for?  What are you trying to accomplish?  What do you need?

Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall
be added unto you.
