deteriorating situation in Yugoslavia Russia announced that it will no longer cooperate with the U.S.
to en-sure that Y2K problems do not plague nuclear weapons monitoring systems. This doesn't
mean something bad is going to happen. But it means that our chances of preventing something
bad from happening just went down.

Russian General Alexander Lebed, now governor of Russia's Krasnoyarsk region and possible
candidate to succeed Boris Yeltsin as president of Russia, is urging Russia to take a more
aggressive stand with Yugoslavia. He was quoted as saying, “We must declare that we will render
military and technical aid to Yugoslavia with the aim to support the civilian population.
April 5, 1999 - VOLUNTEERS FROM RUSSIA ARRIVE TO FIGHT ALONGSIDE SERBS - The first
group of Russian volunteers arrived Sunday to help Yugoslavia fight NATO forces. "The Russian
volun-teers are waiting to be posted to defend Yugoslavia against the shameless attacks by the
bloody NATO aggressors." “Russian nation-alists and former servicemen were reported to have
started recruiting volunteers to fight in Yugoslavia a few days after the NATO air strikes on
Yugoslavia began on March 24.”
April 9, 1999 - RUSSIA MAKES MOVES AGAINST NATO OVER YUGOSLAVIA - Russia moved
ships to the Mediterranean Sea in a show of force against NATO which is carrying out attacks on
Serb forces in Yugoslavia, Russia’s traditional ally. Russian President Yel-tsin has ordered strategic
missiles be targeted at NATO nations. He said Russia could not allow the Western alliance to
‘seize’ Yugoslavia by sending in troops.".

Cossacks from Russian have vowed to help the Serbs defeat NATO forces. In March Cossack
leaders pledged to gather 5,000 volunteers to defend the Serbs
