The Antichrist and the
Revived Roman Empire
Daniel 2

31.  Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent,
stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
32  This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33  His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34  Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were
of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

Daniel revealed that this image symbolized the future course of world empires until the end of this age.
One of the most significant revela-tions was that there would only be four world empires from Babylon in
606 BC, until the Second coming of Christ when He would introduce His heavenly and eternal "Stone"
kingdom with Himself as Messiah King.

This vision of the great image revealed that each stage of these four empires would decrease in value, but
would increase in strength.  As Daniel 2 indicates, the first empire was Babylon.  Scholars agree that the
second was Media-Persia; the third, Greece; and the fourth was the Roman Empire.  The iron legs
represent Rome in its empire stage.  The empire that is still to come, the feet with ten toes, represent the
re-vived Roman Empire in its final form during the period leading up to the battle of Armageddon.

Da 2:41  And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom
shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, for-asmuch as thou sawest the iron
mixed with miry clay.

Da 7:20  And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom
three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more
stout than his fellows.

Da 7:23  Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse
from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
Da 7:24  And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after
them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.

Re 12:3  And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven
heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

Re 13:1  And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven
heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

This prophecy proves that the future is in the hands of God (2:45) and He has decreed that this last world
power will be a reveal of the ancient Roman Empire within a confederacy of ten nations, based upon the
territory of the old Roman Empire.

Da 7:7  After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terri-ble, and strong
exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the
feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.

Da 7:8  I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom
there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, be-hold, in this horn were eyes like the
eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.

The interpretation of this vision indicates that these ten nations form a ten-nation "Roman confederacy".
(Belgian Foreign Minister Henri Spaak said of the European alliance, "We were consciously re-creating the
Roman Empire once more.")   Then the "little horn", the new leader of Western Europe (the Antichrist), will
seize three of the nations by force.  Then the other seven nations apparently will submit and join him.
Although he will rule for seven years (9.27), his absolute power over all of the nations of the earth and
over the new believers, the "tribulation saints," will last only for 1260 days from his sacrilegious en-trance
into the new Temple in Jerusalem (7.25) until the final Battle of Armageddon when he will be destroyed by
Christ.

In June, 1979, Europe held its first election for the European Parlia-ment, the first directly elected,
multinational assembly in history, which was set up to deal with European community problems.  This is a
natu-ral development of a process which began in 1958 with the founding of the European Common
Market and the North Atlantic Treaty Organiza-tion (NATO).  Europe, unknowingly, began its first tentative
steps to-ward the long prophesied ten-nation confederacy based on the ancient Roman Empire.
Interestingly, the EEC is based on the Treaty of Rome, which was signed in Tome on March 25, 1957.
Jean Monnet was one of the inspirers of this union and declared the ultimate objec-tive when he said,
"Once a common market interest has been created, then political union will come naturally."

The Treaty of Rome signed March 25, 1957 establishes a European Economic Community (the Common
Market). Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands remove mutual tariff
barriers to promote the economy of Europe and make it a viable competitor with Britain and the United
States.

The European Economic Community (Common Market) created in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome accepts
Britain, Ireland, Denmark, and Norway to membership with the Treaty of Brussels signed January 22. The
House of Commons acts July 14 to permit British participation and the EEC expands to embrace 20 nations
with 257 million people in the world’s most powerful trading block.

A report from Brussels in January, 1985 told of a poll which showed that 52 % of Europeans supported the
idea of transforming the pre-sent, ten-nation Common Market into a true confederacy to be known as the
United States of Europe.  This proposed confederation would go well beyond the current economic,
customs union, and involve defense as well as political union similar to Canada's Provinces or the USofA.

It’s not a bad idea.

All of these actions are the embryonic stages of the final Revival of the Roman Empire foreseen by the
prophet Daniel.

·        1.  And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder,
one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

The terrible judgments will not begin like a nuclear explosion, but rather like a tiny snowball rolling down a
long hill.  They will not appear that bad at first but they will gain strength and momentum with each roll.
Things will eventually get out of control and become so bad that mankind would destroy the earth were it
not for the Second Coming of Jesus.

Notice who opens the seals.  Jesus!  He is in charge of the judgments and their timing.  He once said,
“Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the
Son just as they honor the Father” (John 5:22, 23).  When he opens the first seal, one of the four living
creatures will speak in a voice like thunder.

Today, as long as the Church is in the world, God will not send these terrible judgments.  But as soon as
the Church is taken to heaven, God will not hesitate to pour out his wrath.

·        2.  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given
unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Chapter 19 also speaks of a rider on a white horse – Jesus.  For this reason, a few experts suggest that
this rider will also be Jesus.  But most experts disagree, believing this rider to be none other than the
counterfeit Christ, or Antichrist.

He will come forth with a bow.  A bow was an effective weapon in John’s day; a symbol of military power.
However, nothing is said about arrows, so many think this rider will come forth as a man of peace.

Crowns were worn by heads of state.  Those who wore them usually earned or inherited the right to wear
their crown.  But this man will re-ceive his crown as a gift, meaning he will not earn or inherit it.

The world will be looking for such a ruler who can put an end to nu-clear weapons, environmental and
economic problems, poverty, etc.  He will g forth as a conqueror bent on conquest, thereby abandoning his
peace program in an attempt to dominate the world.  But his use of force to attain his goal of world
domination will be a disaster, resulting in the persecution and death of all those who oppose him. The
earth will have a charismatic leader negotiating peace treaties that are a fake.
