The Greatest Events In History
There are 3 great events I want to talk about today. They are, without question, the 3 greatest events in
the history of mankind.
These 3 events have had the most profound effect on our lives of any events in history.
The first event is the Birth of Jesus Christ.
This was no ordinary birth.
Galatians 4:4 But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law,
This child was the Son of God.
In fact, he was God –
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of
the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh,
justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into
glory.
God actually became one of us.
It was a miraculous birth. He was born of a virgin. At his birth and through his lifetime he fulfilled
prophecies that had been given hundreds of years before his birth.
But why did he come? Why did God become a man?
His purpose was the salvation of man. Through sin, man had fallen out of favor with God and was
condemned to punishment.
But the Father sent a savior – his Son, Jesus – a man without sin – to die for the sins of all mankind.
The brings us to the second great event in history – his crucifixion.
The death of Jesus was more than just the death of a great man. It was the death of a savior – the death
of a substitute. He died, not for his own sins, but for ours. He paid the price of our sins. He died in our
place. He took our punishment.
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment
that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD
has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
The suffering and death of Jesus was more than any of us can imagine.
He was first betrayed by a trusted friend.
Then he was forsaken by his other friends.
He was falsely accused by those who were jealous of his power.
He beaten severely and without mercy.
Then he was nailed to a cross and hung up to die a torturous death.
Worst of all, God, the Father, turned away from him because of the sin he had taken on himself. A
righteous God cannot tolerate sin. But losing the Father’s presence was more than Jesus could tolerate.
This was the worst part of his punishment.
Finally, he declared, “It is finished.” And then he died.
What was finished? The punishment for sin. The obligation was fulfilled. The debt was cancelled.
The final step was the resurrection.
The resurrection of Jesus broke the power of sin and death and finished the job of redemption.
When Jesus died, the Bible tells us that he stayed in the grave for 3 days, just as he predicted and then he
came back to life and came out of the grave.
The Bible explains the reason:
Romans 4:25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
When Jesus came back to life, he defeated death. His death paid the price for sins. His resurrection
justified us – in other words, it broke the power of sin over us.
Satan has no legal hold on us any longer. Before, we were guilty and Satan had a legal right to destroy
us. But now, Jesus has removed our guilt.
Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with
the riches of God’s grace
His death brought us forgiveness. His resurrection gave us a fresh start without the guilt of the sin that he
removed by his death.
1 Corinthians 15:17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
1 Corinthians 15:19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.
1 Corinthians 15:20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, [and] become the firstfruits of them that slept.
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
You see, the resurrection of Jesus gives us hope. We have hope for this life and we have hope for the
future.
Romans 6:5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him
in his resurrection.
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even
though he dies;
There is one more great event I want to mention: Jesus is coming back!
John 14:2 …I am going … to prepare a place for you.
John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you
also may be where I am.
