A Child Is Born
he will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (NIV)
Isa 9:7  Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's
throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time
on and for ever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. (NIV)

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders.

In chapter 7, Isaiah gives us more insight:
Isa 7:14  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a
son, and shall call his name Immanuel. (AV)

Consider the miracle of Christmas – a virgin conceived and gave birth.  That is impossible.  That is
miraculous.

I don’t know of any other prophet or holy man or woman who has (1) claimed a virgin birth, or who has
(2) claimed to be God manifested in the flesh, or (3) who has risen from the dead.

“…the government shall be upon his shoulders…”  He is in charge!  He is ruler over all the universe.  He
can command the stars, the planets, the events of history – everything.

And His name shall be called …
(Now what follows is a great description of who and what Jesus is.)

Wonderful
His name is wonderful.  It does not say he has a wonderful name.  It says his name IS Wonderful.
Names like this are descriptive of character.  His name is “Wonderful One”.  His name is “Excellent
One”.  His name is “One who is worthy of praise”.

In fact, his name is above every other name.  His name makes demons tremble.  His name will cause
every knee to bow and every tongue to confess that He is Lord.

Counselor
What a wonderful picture of our Savior.  He is our counselor.  He is one we can talk to about any
problem.  He is one who will always listen and never repeat what he hears to anyone else.  He is one
who will always understand and will never make us feel foolish.  He will never condemn, but will always
encourage and give direction.  He knows your heart even before you begin to speak.  And He will always
be there – always listen – always care.

Ps 46:1 God [is] our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (AV)

Heb 13:5  … I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. (AV)

1Pe 5:7  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Mighty God
There are various names used to describe who God is throughout the Bible.  I.e. Jehovah Jireh means
the God who provides.  Jehovah Rapha means the God who heals.
One name, El Shaddai, means the Almighty one.  It refers to the one who has all power.
Jesus is called Mighty God.  He is God in the flesh.  The Bible tells us that “the Word was God…” and
“the Word became flesh and lived among us…”
It tells us that God  “…was manifest in the flesh.”
Jesus is the Mighty God.
He said:
Mt 28:18  …All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Isn’t it good to know that your counselor is one who is mighty enough to help you in any situation?

Everlasting Father
Here again Jesus is equated with the Father.  He said, “I and my Father are one.”  “When you have
seen me, you have seen the Father.”
This child, born of a virgin – this “son given unto us” – His name is Everlasting Father.
The Bible says he is everlasting – He is “…the same, yesterday, today, and forever.”
Whatever else passes, He will always be there.  When you cannot count on anything else, you can
count on him.

Prince of Peace
Peace – that sounds so nice.  We all need peace in our lives.  Traffic is hectic.  Work is sometimes
hectic.  Life sometimes seems out of control.  We need peace.
When all else around you is in turmoil, what you need is peace in your spirit.  Jesus can provide that.
He is the Prince of Peace.

Mr 4:39  He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet (peace)! Be still!" Then the wind
died down and it was completely calm. (NIV)

Joh 16:33  "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have
trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (NIV)

Joh 20:21  Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." (NIV)

Php 4:7  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your
minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

In the midst of the storm, He brings peace.  He is the Prince of Peace.

Finally, “Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's
throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time
on and for ever.”

His Kingdom, with all of his benefits and blessings, is everlasting.  It will never end.
Most of the things we depend on are temporary.
The power will go off!
The bumbula will run out!
The money will lose its value!
Governments will change!
People will die!
Nothing stays the same – except Him!

On that first Christmas day –
Stability came into an uncertain world.
Forgiveness came into an unforgiving existence.
Salvation came to a lost world.
Hope came to those without hope.

Don’t look to the things of this world for your comfort.  Look to the one who is “…the God of all comfort…”

Heb 12:2  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before
him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NIV)
