The Truth About the Bible
Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates
even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

A missionary serving in a Muslim nation had to find a safe place to read his Bible.  Had he been seen publicly
reading it he would have been expelled from the country.  So he climbed up a tree and found a hidden place
among the leaves and began to read.  Soon he heard some people coming, so he placed his Bible between
some branches and climbed down from the tree and left.  Several hours later, a Muslim holy man sat under that
same tree and began to pray.  A gust of wind came along and shook the Bible out of the tree, and it fell on the
man’s head.  He began to read it and excitedly took it to the Imam.  He said, “I was praying to God and this Holy
Book fell from heaven and hit me on the head.”  They read the Bible and were converted and spread the
gospel of Jesus through the whole village.

I want you to know that the Bible is not just a collection of stories about God and His people.  It is not just a rule
book of guidlelines of how to live.  It is not just a book explaining a philosophy of life.

The Bible is a supernatual book.  It has the power of God in it, because it was given by God.
2 Peter 1:21  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were
moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness:

We must see the Bible for what it is.  It is the Word of God, not the words of men about God.  It was written as
God dictated it through the Holy Spirit to holy men who wrote what they were inspired to write.
The word ‘inspired’ means that God ‘breathed’ it through them – like blowing into a trumpet.  The music comes
through the trumpet, but is originates from the musician blowing into the trumpet.  God used men as
instruments.  What came out is what He put in.  The Bible is a letter from God to man.

It is God’s Words spoken to man.  It is living and active. It has power in it.  It is more than just words on a page,
because it is empowered by the Spirit of God.  It is able to reach into your heart and expose what is there.  It is
able to convict you of sin, but it is also able to give you the power to overcome that sin and remove your guilt,
because it reveals Jesus to you.

Remember that Jesus is called the Word of God.  The Bible is God’s written revelation of Himself.  Jesus is God’
s physical revelation of Himself.

35 years ago I was living a sinful life without God.  One day I began to read the Bible.  The message got into my
heart.  I believed the truth of God’s Word and came to know Jesus, because God’s Word came to life in me.
People had tried to convert me for years with no success.  But there is power in God’s Word that reaches into
the heart of man and changes him.
Many books can inspire, but only the Bible can supernaturally change a man.

What is the Bible?

First and foremost, it is God’s revelation of Himself to man.  God wants us to know him.  He is not hiding
himself.  The Bible reveals to us the mysteries of God.

The Bible is a history of God’s people, the Jews and then the church.  It is a record of how God has dealt with
man throughout history.  In this way, it records how God interacts with man and reveals to us the heart and
nature of God.

The Bible does list the rules and tell us what God expects of us.
It also gives us a philosophical view of life from God’s perspective.
But it also has the power to change us.

We must realize the power of words.
When the president speaks, his words affect the whole nation.
When a judge speaks at the end of a trial, his word becomes law.
When a dictator speaks his word is final.  He has the power of life and death in his words.

But when God speaks, worlds are created.  God said, “Let there be light,” and the light began to shine.
Romans 4:17... the God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were.
Jesus said, “Peace, be still,” and the wind stopped blowing and the storm disappeared.
Jesus said, “Lazarus come forth,” and a dead man came back to life and walked.

A word spoken from the right person has power.  I have seen a small policeman stop a large truck by just
saying , “Stop.”  He can do that because he has the power of the law behind him.

But God has all power behind his words.  He created with his words and he is still working through his words.
We have his Word in written form right here in the Bible.

The Bible can reach into your heart and change it because it has creative and healing power.  My life was
changed, not because I read some inspiring words, but because I read some life changing words.  I read words
with supernatural power in them.

2 Timothy 3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness:
The Bible gives us direction, but it also gives us the power to follow that direction.

The Bible is a book that will never fail.
Matthew 24:35  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.  (3x)

Matthew 5:18  I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke
of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

The Bible is spiritual food.
Job 23:12  ... I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

How many of us would neglect eating.  We feed our bodies so that wil grow and so we can live.  Food is fuel for
the body.  The Bible is fuel for the soul and spirit.

Matthew 4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that
proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Isaiah 40:8  The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands for ever."
(repeated in 1 Pet 1.25)

You grow spiritually – in closeness to God – through reading God’s Word.

1 Peter 2:2  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,

Romans 10:17  Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the
word of Christ.

I want you to know that this book – The Bible – is your lifeline.  Reading it is like having a conversation with
God.  It reveals truth.  It gives life.  It brings healing.  It brings deliverance.

-        When life tells you that you are no good, the Bible tells you that you are made in the image of God and
that Jesus gave his life for you, so God values you that much.
-        When life tells you that you cannot succeed, the Bible tells you that you can do all things through Christ.
-        When life tells you that nobody cares, the Bible tells you that God loves you with a neverending love.
-        When life discourages you, the Bible tells you of miraculous things that God can do in and through you.

The Bible is a book of hope in a world that wreaks of hopelessness.

If you neglect the Bible, you are neglceting the greatest resource you have at your disposal.  Isn’t it amazing
that God was so serious about revealing his Word to us that he had it written down?
